Acoustics 08 Paris, July 2008
Between June 30th and 6th July
2008 9 people from the the Acoustics Group attended Acoustics 08 in Paris.
Five papers were presented by Prof Shield, Christos Nestoras, Linda Liviani,
Phil Wash, Georgia Zepidou. Salih and Bilgin Hassan joined us for the
banquet at the Institute of Chemistry.
It may look like we drink a lot, but we did do some work! Although Steve
Dance and Salva Morant were just taking it easy. Georgia Zepidou presented
her paper on, "An audiometry study of the students of the Royal Academy of
Music".Linda Liviani presented her MSc dissertation on urbines as a poster,

Inter-Noise 2008 Shanghai, October
2008
The International Congress on Noise
Control Engineering was held in Shanghai Convention Centre 26-29th
October 2008. Ten parallel sessions were arranged covering all areas of
acoustics with 1200 delegates in attendance. The
Acoustics Group
had 3 representatives in attendance: Stephen Dance, Christos Nestoras and
Louis Gomez.
Three papers were presented in the architectural acoustics session on
Underground spaces. Stephen Dance gave a paper entitled, “Are
simplified models good enough to predict the acoustics of Underground
Stations?” based on the KTP work with Telent. Christos Nestoras presented
his PhD research “Design and Validation of Computer Models for the
Assessment of Speech Intelligibility in Enclosed Spaces”. Louis Gomez the
KTP Associate with Telent presented, “Evaluation of More Suitable Test
Methodologies to Obtain RT and STI in London Underground Spaces”. Contacts
were made, particular with instrumentation manufacturers in China, which
could potentially save the group a fortune in replacing broken microphones!
