TRAINEE INSTRUCTORS BADGE

The BCU Trainee Level 2 Coach award is available for anyone aged 16 or over. To attend the training course, you must have:

  • BCU 3 Star skills qualification. (see note 1

  • Recognised first aid certificate. (see note 2

  • Canoe Safety Test (see note 3

  • Membership of the BCU. This can be completed at the same time as registering for the course.

Holding this qualification allows Cadets to supervise up to 8 other paddlers on the water in the appropriate paddling craft (i.e., the type of craft for which the Cadet has taken the Coaching award in: Kayak, Open Canoe or Placid Water Kayak). However, Cadets are not allowed to supervise other Cadets on the water on their own, they must always be under the supervision of an adult SCC or BCU Supervisor/Coach. The supervising adult must also be afloat to carry out this duty.

This qualification allows the Cadet to qualify for 12 promotion points, and also entitles the Cadet to wear the fifth grade canoe badge (Canoe, Paddle, Laurel Wreath and Crown). The badge is awarded by Commanding Officers to holders of this award.

Note 1:
The star skill must be in the appropriate paddling discipline. For example; if you want to do a BCU Level 2 Open Canoe Coach Course, you will need a BCU 3 star Open Canoe award. Most Cadets will have followed the ‘Closed Cockpit Kayak’ route, but some Cadets may have Open Canoe or Placid Water qualifications.

Note 2:
The CST is either carried out in a Kayak or Open Canoe. This is noted on the CST certificate next to the Certificate number as ‘K’ or ‘CN’. Cadets and Staff who have a CST-Kayak may attend both Kayak and Open Canoe Coach Courses. Cadets and Staff who have the CST-Open Canoe may only attend Open Canoe Coach Courses. Most CST courses run in the Sea Cadets are in Kayaks. Certificates must also be in date (CST certificates last for three years).

Note 3:
First aid courses must be a minimum of 4 hours. The SCC First Aid awards are not recognised by the BCU. Cadets and Staff should hold RYA, BCU, St Johns or Red Cross first aid certificates which must be in date. (First aid certificates last for three years).
